My child won't eat without a screen

A very common habit: it starts with a short video "so they eat faster", and soon eating without it feels impossible. It can be undone, but gradually and calmly, not all at once.

Why the habit forms

When kids eat with their eyes on a screen, they don't notice what they eat or when they're full, and food becomes linked to the video. Over time, sitting down to eat without a screen feels boring to them.

1. Start with one meal

Don't change every meal in one day. Pick one meal, like dinner, and make it screen-free for everyone.

2. Adults first

If adults' phones are on the table, your child will ask for theirs. Put all phones away at mealtimes. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends screen-free mealtimes for the whole family.

3. Make the table enjoyable

A short chat, a question about their day, a game of "what was the best thing you ate today?". The screen gets replaced by attention, not emptiness.

4. Small portions, set time

Serve a small portion and keep mealtime reasonable. If they don't eat, that's okay; the next meal will come. Avoid bargaining and phone bribes.

5. Involve them in preparing

Kids who help wash vegetables or set the table are more interested in eating.

6. Give it a week or two

The first days can be hard, and that's normal. With consistency, your child gets used to screen-free meals.

How Kite helps

In Kite you can add "eat without the phone" or "help set the table" as chores with points, which your child uses to earn playtime later once you approve. Eating without a screen becomes something they are rewarded for.

Quick answers

My son won't eat without a phone. Should I stop it suddenly?

It's better to go gradually: one screen-free meal first, with adults' phones away too, then extend it to other meals over a week or two.

Is eating in front of a screen harmful?

When kids eat watching a screen they don't notice when they're full or what they eat, and the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends screen-free family meals.
