My child won't listen to me: what can I do?

You're not alone. Not listening is one of the most common things parents struggle with, and it usually doesn't mean your child is "bad" — just that the way instructions reach them needs a small adjustment.

Why kids don't listen

Often your child is absorbed in something, like a game or a screen, and genuinely doesn't hear you. Sometimes instructions are too many or too long, or they've learned that a request gets repeated ten times before it becomes serious.

1. Get their attention first

Walk over, get down to eye level and say their name before you ask. Requests from another room rarely land.

2. One short, clear request

"Put your shoes by the door" is clearer than "tidy your things and be organised". One request at a time.

3. Say it once, calmly

Repeating a lot teaches them the first request doesn't count. Say it once, wait a moment, then help them start if needed.

4. Offer a choice

Strong-willed kids like to feel they have a say. "Do you want to tidy the toys now or after dinner?" Both lead to the same result.

5. Consistent rules they know in advance

When the rule is known in advance (homework before play, for example), you don't need to start a debate every day. The rule does the talking.

6. A predictable consequence, not a threat

Link the behaviour to a natural, known consequence and apply it calmly. A threat that's never carried out teaches them words don't mean anything.

7. Praise it when they listen

"Thanks for coming the first time" teaches more than ten reminders. Notice good behaviour and say it out loud.

8. Make progress visible

Many kids cooperate more when they can see their progress: a chore chart on the fridge, or points they collect.

How Kite helps

Kite is an app that turns your child's chores into points they watch grow on their phone, and spend on playtime once you approve. Instead of repeating yourself, the task and its result are right in front of them.

Quick answers

My child is very stubborn and never listens. What should I do?

Start with one step: get their attention before asking, make one short request, say it once calmly, then praise them when they listen. Consistency matters more than strictness.

Does yelling work with a stubborn child?

It may stop the behaviour for a moment, but it teaches your child to only listen when voices are raised. Consistent rules and calm consequences work better in the long run.
